On October 17, the deployment of the update began Windows 10 fall Creators update(Redstone 3) version 1709 , which Microsoft announced at the May Build 2017 conference. This is the fourth and second major OS update, " addressed primarily to creative people"Ten" has changed its design, supports mixed reality technology "out of the box" and, for example, made friends with Android or iOS. Read below for the most informative review of innovations Windows 10 Fall Creators compared to the April release.

Fluent Design System Design

Fluent Design System is a new "fluid" system design style, formerly known as Project NEON. It is based on five principles: "Light" ("lighting"), "Depth" ("depth"), "Motion" ("movement"), "Material" ("materiality") and "Scale" ("scale"). Reincarnated design Windows 10 is the successor to the "tiled" Metro (Modern) UI from the "eight" and "seven" Aero, which many users missed. As conceived by the creators, Fluent will contribute to the development of software adapted to different screen sizes and types of devices.

As part of the new concept, special attention was paid to touch input devices. For example, Edge makes it easier to enter queries, select text elements, and scroll through content with a stylus. Also in the flagship OS browser, you can write and save comments on PDF documents with a stylus.

Serious changes have affected the Start menu. It now uses the new "Acrylic" style if transparency is enabled in the settings. Menu resizes horizontally and diagonally, improved frame border capture for resizing. Action Center and toast notifications follow the same style, with highlights and shadows more clearly separated and more readable. One thing is upsetting: Fluent Design will be introduced gradually, and we will evaluate the final appearance of the operating system only in the next year, 2018.

Mixed reality, 3D support and Windows Story Remix

With release fall Creators the platform began to support a line of mixed reality devices (Mixed Reality), combining virtual and real objects. This requires special goggles (helmet) and standardized wireless VR-controllers.

In addition to Paint's support for 3D models, 3D shapes can be implanted into the new Windows Story Remix video editor to add special effects to your smartphone or camera footage. Part of the Photos app, the video editor is machine learning and remembers your favorite settings over time. Not only 3D-objects and audio effects, but also annotations on devices with . Story Remix is a cross-platform program that allows you to synchronize videos between a PC and a smartphone, and instantly switch from one to another device while working.

In addition, the "ten" provides the opportunity to introduce 3D-models to MS Word and PowerPoint files. In these office applications, you can rotate objects right inside a document or presentation.

Stream games on Mixer

Gaming is the most popular pastime, in which about 200 million active gamers participate every month (!). Of course, Redmond did not stand aside from sharing the entertainment industry pie and added to Windows 10 Mixer, the rebranded streaming service Beam. And it's not just about the new name, it's now easy to stream both alone and with a team of up to four people. Well, if you become a successful streamer, you can turn your hobby into an additional source of income.

To start broadcasting, press the key combination " Win+G" and start the stream in the called game panel. To configure the streaming parameters, go to the section " Games"from the menu" Options".

Windows 10 moves closer to Android and iOS

Integration with "bosom enemies" includes two points of contact: through services Clipboard and Microsoft Graph. In the first case, after linking the device to Android or iOS (see the settings section " Telephone") you can synchronize your work between it and your existing desktop (laptop). For example, starting typing in Word on your smartphone, you can easily finish the document you have already started on your computer.

Another point of interaction is Microsoft Graph, which unites people, their communication and joint projects within the "cloud", with the function of providing operational analytical data about what is happening in the company. The system allows you to interact with applications equally effectively on any device running Windows, iOS and Android.

The last thing to mention is that Ubuntu and SUSE of the Linux family are now available in the Windows Store.

OneDrive Cloud and Files On-Demand "

Since the conversation turned to cloud storage, it was the turn of OneDrive from the software giant. What was in the "eight" and what is really convenient is the "Files On-Demand" ("Files on demand") function, when files in the "cloud" are available as well as local ones, directly from Explorer. After synchronizing a folder with OneDrive, it does not start "draining" all the files, but you are free to choose which ones you want to download and open. Of course, next to the files (folders) their status is displayed: whether they are available only online or are already present on the hard drive.

Application "People" ("My People" )

Updated Windows Defender (Windows Defender )

IN Windows 10fallCreators Redmond has significantly optimized Windows Defender. New Feature" " allows you to protect important data from ransomware and other malware (if you try to change files in folders, you will receive a notification). To enable the feature, go to Windows Defender Security Center → " Virus and Threat Protection" → in applet " Controlled folder access"set switch to position" On".

The second useful acquisition of Windows Defender is protection against exploits based on a specialized tool Microsoft EMET (Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit). You will find this feature by following the path: Windows Defender Security Center → " Application and browser management" → "Exploit Protection" (enabled by default).

As you can see, the list of improvements and fixes of the OS is very voluminous, so I will take each of remaining significant innovations Windows 10 fall Creators update by line:

  • the Edge browser got a full-screen mode and learned how to pin sites to the taskbar;
  • Cortana can block an account, reboot and turn off the device at your command (alas, not in Russian);
  • "Power Throttling" mode saves battery power (for processors supporting Intel Speed Shift technology);

  • in the Task Manager, the load level of the video card (GPU) is displayed;
  • function " Find device" ("Find My Device") allows you to detect a lost stylus;
  • built-in blocks cheats in computer games;
  • new touch keyboard supports seamless typing;
  • a panel with emoji emoticons appeared, which is called by the combination " win + ." or " Win + ;".

Is your computer running Windows 10? Then you should be aware that every six months or so this operating system receives a new feature update. The next one will be the Fall Creators Update (version 1709), which will be officially released on October 17, 2017, that is, tomorrow.

What is the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update?

In April 2017, Microsoft released the Windows 10 Creators Update, the third major update to the operating system. However, Microsoft was unable to complete all the features planned for the Creators Update. The Fall Creators Update (or Fall Creators Update) is the completion of the work that was started with the Creators Update. Fall Creators Update official release date - The update contains a lot of changes, and below are the most important ones that may help you decide whether to install it.

1. Connecting with others just got easier

The update adds a new and exciting feature that Microsoft is calling "People". This is an interface that eliminates the need to launch the corresponding application to access the most frequent contacts. With the People panel, you can start a conversation or send a file via Skype, Outlook Mail or another compatible application right from the taskbar. All it takes is a few mouse clicks.

2. Files on Demand returned to OneDrive

Files On-Demand is not a completely new feature. It appeared in Windows 8.1 (under the name Placeholders), but for some reason was not included in the new operating system. Now, more than two years after the original release of Windows 10, this much-requested feature is becoming part of the Top Ten.

With Files On-Demand, Windows 10 can display in File Explorer all the files a user has stored in their OneDrive cloud storage, including those that haven't been synced to their local computer and are only stored in the cloud. The feature is much needed and will be greeted with jubilation by users who store large amounts of data in OneDrive, but do not have a capacious drive to keep everything in sync.

3. A new way to resize the start menu

If in previous versions of the operating system the size of the Start menu can only be resized horizontally and vertically, in the new version, resizing the menu diagonally is also a faster way to make it wider and taller, or vice versa.

4. Information about the use of video card resources appeared in the task manager

With the new update, the operating system has acquired a valuable tool called "GPU", which shows the performance of the computer's graphics card in the task manager window. Gamers and video editors will love this feature.

5. Protection of folders from ransomware viruses

Windows Defender comes with a security feature called Controlled Folder Access. Its task is to protect folders from any unauthorized access or changes by programs or applications. This ensures that no malware, for example, can encrypt important files stored in folders such as Documents or Pictures. In addition to folders that are protected by default, the function allows you to include any other folders in the list of protected folders.

6. New notification center

Microsoft designers have refreshed the look and feel of the notification center with a new Fluent Design style, and now it looks much better than before. Moreover, the organization of notifications and the way information is displayed have been improved. We love the new version and we think you'll love it too.

7. Bandwidth control when downloading and sending system updates

The Settings app has a new feature that allows you to set a specific limit (as a percentage) of the bandwidth that a device can use to receive and send operating system updates to other computers, as well as a monthly limit for transferring data to other PCs on the Internet. In addition, the Delivery Optimization settings now include an activity monitor that displays detailed information about the amount of updates received and transmitted, as well as the average data download speed.

8. Full screen mode in Microsoft Edge

It's weird, we know, but until now Microsoft Edge hasn't had an (official) full screen mode. In the Fall Creators Update, the browser can be switched to full screen mode, just like in any other browser: using the corresponding button in the main menu or by pressing the F11 key on the keyboard.

9. You can share files directly from the explorer context menu

It's even easier than it sounds: select one or more files, then open the context menu and select the share option from the context menu to send these items to your contacts using apps like Mail, Skype, Dropbox, Box, OneDrive, and more.

10. Connecting an Android or iPhone device to a PC

By linking your mobile device to your computer, you can seamlessly transfer work from one device to another. For example, while browsing a site on your smartphone, you can sit down at your Windows 10 PC and continue browsing that site from the same place using Microsoft Edge. The same process applies to reading and writing emails and other applications that have been developed by Microsoft. The only condition is that you must use Microsoft apps on Android or iPhone.

11. Memory control has become more powerful

"Storage Sense" is a function that can take care of deleting certain kinds of files on its own when the disk runs out of free space. These include temporary files, as well as files that were moved to the trash more than 30 days ago, and in the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, files were added to them in the Downloads folder that have not been changed for 30 days. Additionally, this tool allows you to uninstall previous versions of Windows.

In countries where the Microsoft virtual assistant works (Russia is not one of them), users no longer need to get out of bed to turn off, lock or restart the computer after watching the last episode of their favorite series: Cortana can now do this. Just say “Hey Cortana, shut down my PC”, “Hey Cortana, lock my PC”, “Hey Cortana, sign me out” or “Hey Cortana, restart my PC” (depending on what you need) and voice the assistant will instantly do what she was asked to do.

13. Settings app now has remote desktop settings

Whereas previously you could only configure Remote Desktop settings from the old Control Panel, most of these configuration options can now be found in the modern Settings app.

14. Simple Test Connectivity to Xbox Live Services

The Fall Creators Update enhances a new tool designed specifically for gamers. In particular, it has a new section "Xbox Network", which provides information about latency, packet loss and the correctness of home network settings for online play through the Xbox Live services. The update is designed to help identify and address issues that prevent voice chat and normal multiplayer gaming with other Xbox Live users.

Other changes in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

  • The battery information panel that is opened by clicking on the battery icon in the taskbar now contains a slider that can be used to switch between the available power modes.
  • New TruePlay feature designed to prevent cheating in multiplayer games.
  • Android smartphone users can receive missed call notifications on their PC (the mobile device must have the Cortana app installed).

This list could be continued, but we decided to limit ourselves to only the most basic changes. In fact, there are many more changes.

We never tire of repeating that updating the OS is extremely important. And we often get the question of how to download the 1709 Fall Creators Update and how to upgrade to this version on your build of Windows 10.

In the fall of 2017, Microsoft announced a new update to its Windows 10 operating system to version 1709 called the Fall Creators Update. It managed to implement many innovations and innovations, thanks to which it is supposed to make the system even a little better in all respects. Therefore, it is worth talking a little about some of the new products that developers have been able to offer their users. And you can download this version both on our portal and on the official resources of the company.

New features in Windows 10 1709 Fall Creators Update

Judging by the name, to a greater extent, such an update was designed for IT professionals. Let's see what the developers were able to prepare for them:
  • The file system has been improved, which will make it easier to work in the Linux subsystem;
  • Enabling developer mode in WSL is no longer required;
  • Lots of changes. Concerning work with Hyper-V;
  • Added the ability for users of the server version to participate in the Insider Program;
  • A new version of Workstation has been released and can be downloaded with the current update.
And also many small bugs that were present in the system before this update were fixed. In particular, it is supposed to improve work with high-resolution screens, fixes in the "Night mode", etc.

The developers were asked to remove the beloved by many due to the fact that this application is considered obsolete. They tend to work more towards 3D technologies and develop Paint 3D. Now many will be interested in the question of how to download a remote application. Most likely, it will be available in the Store. So if you decide to download Windows 10 1709 Fall Creators Update, then be prepared for the lack of standard Paint.

In the system update to version 1709, the most attention was paid to security issues. That is why for some editions of the system it is supposed to limit the collection of user data by the users themselves.

Work continued on integrating devices with the system. For example, it became possible to link the phone to a PC so that the user can view the links on the smartphone that he sends to himself from a personal computer.

Among the interesting features that have become available to users who have been able to download the Windows 10 update to version 1709 Fall Creators Update is a feature that allows memory monitoring. It allows users not to deal with self-deletion of unused files in a situation in which the disk has too little free space. Such files will be recognized as those that have been in the trash for more than a month. As well as temporary system files, data from the Downloads folder. As an add-on, this feature offers the ability to uninstall previous editions of the system.

How to update

If you have already realized that it is impossible for you to do without installing this package, then you have two options. First, go to Settings and in the "Update and Security" section, use the built-in features. To do this, first activate the search for available updates and then install everything that the system offers.

The second option is to use the official Microsoft website and install the necessary add-ons manually. The second option should be used only if the first did not help you. But in this case, you will have to download the 1709 Fall Creators Update, then install it - all this manually, and this, in our opinion, does not fit the 21st century.

Which option to choose is up to you. Here you can download the latest version of Windows 10, which initially includes all the latest patches and adpats. Also, do not forget that Microsoft only releases cumulative products, which means that you can download a more recent generation, for example, 2018, which will initially include this assembly for 2017. You do not need to manually download and install one by one.

The Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (Redstone 3) will be released on October 17, 2017. Let's take a look at the new features, major improvements and changes expected by users

With update Windows 10 Fall Creators Update(version 1709) should bring new features and improvements that will make Windows 10 better in many ways. The official release date for the update is October 17, 2017.

In this article, we have collected all the new features of the system that were announced at the Build 2017 developer conference. The review also adds new features that have arrived in the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview builds.

OneDrive Files On Demand feature

Microsoft has announced a new OneDrive cloud service feature called “ Files on demand". This feature allows you to store displayed files on a cloud server and access them without synchronizing with the local machine. This feature was present in Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 users often asked for it back. A similar feature should be coming to Dropbox and Google Drive soon.

Notably, the new feature will work with the Desktop and Documents folders, not just the OneDrive folder.

When you try to open a file that is stored on your computer, Windows will download it and then run it. This feature will be implemented in the core of the operating system and will work with any application, even with the command line.

If the application tries to access a file stored in the cloud storage and tries to download it, the user will receive a notification. You can hide the alert or block the download of the file. You can also block future attempts to download files for a specific application. You can manage blocked apps in Settings > Privacy > Downloads requested by an app.

New Visual Language Fluent Design

Microsoft is developing a new visual language called Fluent Design. The new design will focus on 5 main principles: light, depth, material, scale and movement. This is the final implementation of the Project Neon visual language that Microsoft has been developing lately. Fluent Design presents not only an updated system design, but a new interaction model.

Particular attention will be paid to the use of touch input devices, in particular the stylus, to navigate throughout the operating system. It will make it easier to type queries with the stylus in the Edge browser, to scroll through content by moving the stylus, and to select text elements. Microsoft is touting Microsoft Edge as "the best ink-enabled browser". You can now add comments to PDF documents in Edge using the stylus.

Fluent Design will be implemented not only in the system shell interface, but also in almost all embedded applications.

As part of the implementation of the new Fluent Design visual language, the Start menu has been seriously redesigned. The menu now uses the new Acrylic design if transparency is enabled in the settings. The menu can be resized not only horizontally, but also diagonally. In addition, the capture of the border of the frame for resizing is simplified. The transition to “Tablet Mode” has become smoother.

The Action Center also received interface improvements. Notifications are now more clearly separated and thus more readable. The action center and toast notifications also use the modern Acrylic design.

Handwriting and stylus

Taking into account the overall concept of the Fluent Design System, the developers decided to improve the stylus support in Windows in order to make it easier to navigate the entire operating system using this tool. Handwriting-to-type conversion in Microsoft Edge has been improved, content scrolling with the stylus has been added, and text selection has been made faster. The stylus scrolling feature is currently only available in UWP apps, but Microsoft plans to bring it to desktop (Win32) apps as well.

Microsoft is trying to make Microsoft Edge "the best browser to use a stylus." Users can now add comments to PDF documents using the stylus as well.

The handwriting panel available in the Windows 10 touch keyboard has received numerous improvements. When you fill up a panel and then lift the stylus away from the screen, the text you enter automatically moves to the left, so you always have plenty of space to write.

The text you write will always be shown in the panel, and you can select it for editing later. You can write the correct letters over the recognized word if the panel did not correctly detect your handwriting. Changes can also be made using gestures. You can cross out words with the strikethrough gesture to delete them, and use the join and split gestures to connect words or add a space between them, respectively.

The handwriting panel now provides easy access to emoticons and special characters by adding two new buttons to the panel. By default, the panel is now placed next to the elements in which you write. Fingerprinting is also disabled, but you can always enable this option again. This measure was taken to prevent accidental dragging of the panel with your finger when using the stylus.

Now losing the stylus will not be easy. You can go to Settings > Update & security > Find my stylus and use the "Where's my stylus?" feature. Windows 10 will show you the location of your computer or tablet when you last used the stylus, making it easier to find your input device.

Windows My People - advanced work with contacts

Microsoft originally planned to introduce the Windows My People feature back in the Windows 10 Creators Update. However, the developers have taken more time to implement this functionality, it is now expected in the Fall Creators Update.

Task Manager will show GPU information

Task Manager now allows you to view the consumption of graphics subsystem resources, as well as CPU, memory, disk and network resources. Just open the Task Manager and go to the "Performance" tab.

The "GPU" function shows the consumption of video memory and the activity of different engines: 3D graphics, copying, encoding and decoding of video information are available. On the Details tab of the Task Manager, you can see how much GPU power each process in the system is consuming.

New touch keyboard

Windows 10 will get a new touch keyboard. It is based on the Microsoft WordFlow Keyboard for Windows Phone. The keyboard will also get smart features from SwiftKey, the popular keyboard for iPhone and Android. Recall that SwiftKey was acquired by Microsoft in 2016.

The most noticeable improvement will be support for continuous swipe input. You simply touch one touch key and move your finger to other keys corresponding to the letters of the word. When you lift your finger from the screen, the keyboard will automatically recognize the word and insert a space. This technology is used on many popular smartphone keyboards, including SwiftKey and Google Keyboard.

The predictive input technology will also be improved, which automatically suggests phrases and work with emoticons will be improved - you no longer have to go to other pages to find the desired emoji, just scroll. The keyboard will be optimized for one-handed typing and will get a new settings menu that can be accessed by clicking on the icon in the top right corner of the keyboard.

In the Fall Creators Update, you can use dictation to enter text. Just press the microphone button on your keyboard or use the Windows + H shortcut and start speaking phrases. The dictation feature will support voice commands such as “delete last three words” or “go to end of paragraph”.

The new touch keyboard is part of CShell's new design concept, which provides for adaptive interfaces that can be used on any device, be it smartphones, tablets or computers.

[Simplified] Windows Story Remix is a handy video editor with many smart features

Microsoft has announced a new "Windows Story Remix" app that lets you edit videos, add soundtracks, and add text captions. You can capture videos on your Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone and send them to the app. Several people can participate in creating a video - Story Remix will automatically create a story from several videos.

Story Remix also works with photos, allows you to search for people in images, search for “dogs” in photos, and perform other advanced searches using machine learning technology. When you create a video, you can choose an individual as the hero of the video, and Story Remix will automatically create a new video starring that person.

Microsoft has focused on interesting smart features, but you can still edit videos with familiar tools, change filters, add captions, animation effects, delete clips, rearrange video clips, and select different audio tracks. Automatic and manual functions work in tandem with each other. Add a new soundtrack and Story Remix will automatically rearrange the frames to match the song's beats.

The Windows Story Remix app supports importing 3D models from the Remix 3D community, also used for Paint 3D. You can freely integrate animated 3D models into your videos. Microsoft will release an API that will allow developers to integrate the Remix 3D community into their applications.

Microsoft announced this at a presentation. In fact, instead of the new Windows Story Remix app, the Photos app will be getting a new Remix feature that will be more limited than intended. However, Microsoft may continue to add features over time.

Spotify and iTunes will be available in the Windows Store

Microsoft recently announced Windows 10 S, a special education edition of Windows 10 that will only allow app installation from the Windows App Store. For an additional $50, you can upgrade from Windows 10 S to Windows 10 Pro with the ability to install desktop apps (Win32).

At Build 2017, Microsoft announced that Spotify and iTunes will be available for download from the Windows App Store. Thus, users will be able to fully purchase multimedia content and manage their iPhone and iPad devices. iTunes will use the Project Centennial platform, which allows you to turn ordinary desktop programs into UWP applications. Microsoft hopes that other developers will also use this technology to port their products.

Microsoft Edge improvements

Microsoft is putting a lot of effort into improving Microsoft Edge. With the Fall Creators Update, the company promises smoother opening and closing of browser tabs without any lag. Microsoft also plans to introduce additional animation effects as part of the transition to Fluent Design throughout the operating system.

Microsoft Edge now lets you bookmark multiple web pages at once. Right click on a tab and you will see an option to "Add Tabs to Favorites". In this case, all web pages opened in the current browser window will be added to Favorites.

Edge has received a few small improvements. You can now right-click on sites in the Favorites list to edit its URL. In addition, data import from Chrome has been implemented and the ability to close web pages even if they display a JavaScript dialog has been added. Edge is now able to read any PDF documents aloud.

Microsoft Edge will have a full-screen mode. Press F11 or click on the fullscreen icon in the browser's main menu to activate this mode. Thus, Redmond decided to replace the old Shift + Windows + Enter shortcut to bring up full screen mode in Edge.

The browser now allows you to pin websites to the taskbar, a feature previously supported by Internet Explorer. In Edge, click Settings > Pin page to taskbar to add the site's icon to a free area of the taskbar. Pinned sites will open in Edge, but you can also pin sites using Google Chrome.

The built-in PDF viewer in Edge has also received various improvements. In addition to the ability to add notes with a stylus, users can now fill out interactive forms, save and print them. When viewing long documents in Edge, you can use the table of contents feature. You can also rotate documents and adjust the layout for the best viewing experience. Cortana search now works in PDF files, and an expanded color palette can be used to highlight text.

The EPUB eBook viewer integrated into Microsoft Edge allows you to add annotations to EPUB books. You can use 4 colors to highlight text, and strikethrough and annotation tools are also available. . You can also now select text, run a Cortana search on it, and draw in an e-book. Your document and annotation progress will be synced across the computers with your Microsoft account.

Cortana wised up

A new Cortana section has been added to the Settings app. Previously, settings were available in the voice assistant's own interface.

Cortana now requests access to your image library and can automatically recognize event concert posters, prompting you to create an event reminder.

Stylus owners can use the new Lasso tool to highlight events on the screen - Cortana recognizes the date and prompts you to create a notification.

Power Throttling

Microsoft began experimenting with the Power Throttling feature back in the Insider versions of the Creators Update, but the new feature did not make it into the final release. Looks like Microsoft will only add it to the Fall Creators Update.

This feature allows Windows to automatically put the processor into power-efficient mode while background tasks are running. This measure will save battery power and extend the autonomy of the portable device. Windows will automatically identify applications that are running in the background, such as audio players and other important tasks, and will not reduce the resources allocated to them. According to Microsoft, the new feature will reduce CPU consumption by 11 percent when the PC is in heavy use.

You can control this function from the battery management slider, which opens when you click on the battery icon in the system tray. In power saving mode and in balanced mode, Power Throttling will be enabled. In the "Maximum performance" mode, the function is disabled.

You can also disable this feature for individual apps by going to Settings > System > Battery. Just select the application and set the "Managed by Windows" option to "Off" and uncheck the "Reduce background activity of the application" checkbox.

According to Microsoft, this feature only works with processors that support Intel Speed Shift technology - these are the 6th generation of Intel Core (Skylake) processors and newer processors. Microsoft plans to expand processor support during the development of the Fall Creators Update.

Windows Mixed Reality Controllers

Microsoft has announced motion controllers for Windows Mixed Reality headsets, support for which came with the release of the Creators Update. The helmet does not need a separate sensor - the sensors are built into the device itself. You can buy a headset and controller kit for $399. Acer will be the first manufacturer to supply this kit, but other manufacturers will certainly follow suit.

While Microsoft has mainly focused on HoloLens, the less expensive Windows Mixed Reality headsets look more attractive given the fact that they can work with a wider variety of PCs.

Protection against ransomware, exploits and other security improvements

The latest functional update for Windows will add new security features.

New Feature" Controlled folder access" in Windows Defender Security Center allows you to protect folders from unauthorized changes by applications. If an unknown application tries to modify files in these folders, the user will receive a warning. This feature allows you to protect data from ransomware and other malicious applications.

To enable this feature, go to Windows Defender Security Center > Virus & threat protection > Controlled folder access. Set the switch to the "On" position. and select the links "Protected folders" and "Allow application to access protected folders" to configure the function.

Microsoft has also integrated into Windows exploit protection features borrowed from a specialized tool, EMET. These features will be enabled by default and will help protect your computer from various types of exploits.

To find this feature, go to Windows Defender Security Center > App & Browsing Control > Exploit Protection. You can select "Exploit protection settings" to configure advanced settings.

Microsoft has renamed "Windows Firewall" to "Windows Defender Firewall". This did not affect the operation of the security component in any way.

The old SMBv1 protocol, which was used to launch the WannaCry ransomware attack, has been removed from the system. The Server Message Block protocol is used to share files and printers on local networks. Windows will now retain the more up-to-date SMBv2 and SMBv3 specifications. This measure will protect computers from future attacks on outdated software using exploits.

Microsoft has removed certificates issued by WoSign and StartCom from Windows 10. These Chinese CAs do not meet basic security standards. This measure will protect against fraud using certificates issued with violations.

Unfortunately, the Windows Defender Application Guard feature is only available for corporate editions of Windows. When an employee is browsing a website that the organization does not trust, Guard uses Hyper-V virtualization technology to create a new instance of the Windows operating system at the hardware level, running the website in Microsoft Edge on a separate copy of Windows. Even if the browser has been completely hacked, the core Windows operating system will still be safe.

Installing Ubuntu, openSUSE and Fedora from the App Store

Microsoft decided to make it easier to install Ubuntu by moving the operating system to the WIndows App Store. The Store will have the same Ubuntu Bash environment that you can now install on Windows 10.

Fedora and openSUSE will also be available in the Windows Store, making it easier to set up various Linux environments.

Advanced privacy options

Microsoft has decided to expand Windows 10's privacy options, continuing the work it started back in the Creators Update.

When you set up a new system, you will see a privacy statement from Microsoft with information about what data is collected from your computer. During the installation process, you can also click the "More Info" link to view more information about the meaning of certain privacy settings.

In addition, apps from the Windows Store will now issue an access request to various computer resources such as the camera, microphone, contacts, and calendar. Previously, the prompt was only displayed when trying to access your location data.

Users of enterprise editions of Windows 10 can limit the collection of diagnostic data to the minimum required in accordance with Windows Analytics.

Linking a smartphone to a computer

The Settings app will have a new Phone section that will help you set up a connection between your computer and your mobile device. This feature will allow for deeper integration in the future, but for now it is possible to send links from a smartphone to a computer for further viewing.

Third-party developers will now have more time to prepare their products for Windows 10 updates. If you have a third-party antivirus installed, it will be able to display its own update notifications instead of Windows alerts. When a third-party antivirus license expires, the user will receive an alert with three possible actions - upgrade the subscription, select a different antivirus, or switch to Windows Defender.

  • Restoring the state of virtual machines in Hyper-V: The Hyper-V virtual machine tool now supports rollback of virtual machines. Hyper-V now automatically creates virtual machine snapshots. If you make a mistake or want to revert your changes, you can revert the virtual machine to its previous state at the time the snapshot was taken.
  • Hyper-V Virtual Machine Sharing: A new virtual machine sharing feature has been added to Windows that makes it easier to compress and move a virtual machine to another computer. On the toolbar of the machine control window you will find a new icon. The new feature will allow you to compress virtual machines into a .vmcz file. Double clicking on this file on another computer will start the virtual machine import procedure.
  • Virtual battery support in Hyper-V: Hyper-V now allows you to use virtual battery in virtual machines to see the battery life of a laptop in a virtual environment.
  • Windows Server Insider Program: Users of Windows Server systems can now join the Windows Insider program to receive test builds of the system. The WSL subsystem will also be added to Windows Server.
  • Command line support for UWP apps: You can run UWP apps from the command line and apply various options to them.
  • New colors on the command line: Command Prompt and other Windows console applications have received a new color scheme optimized to display more clearly on modern monitors. By default, the new color scheme will only be active on new installations of Windows 10. You can switch between different color themes using the ColorTool app from Microsoft.
