Very often we need reduce the size and weight of a photo or image for uploading to the site- for example, in order to set an avatar or post it in a gallery for a competition. You may also need to reduce the size of the photo if you need to send photos by e-mail, but a lot of weight does not work. And also so that the photo takes up less space on your hard drive or any other storage medium.
Image size refers to one of two concepts:
- the space it occupies in memory (weight) in KB, MB, etc.
- resolution (width and height) in pixels
As a rule, 600-800 pixels are enough to view photos. on the larger side.
There are several ways to reduce the size of a photo. You can compress photos in Photoshop, ACDSee 8.0 Photo Manager, Microsoft Office Picture Manager, XnView, etc.
The easiest way is to use online photo reduction services.
But it’s not always possible to access the Internet, so we can’t do without programs :) The simplest editor for reducing images is Microsoft Office Picture Manager. This program is installed together with Microsoft Office software products, i.e. Almost everyone has it, so you don’t have to look for and install any graphic editor!
To start working on reducing the size, you need to open the picture you need using the Microsoft Office Picture Manager (Microsoft Picture Manager). To do this, right-click on the picture and select “Open with”, and then Microsoft Picture Manager. If Microsoft Picture Manager is not in the list, then use the “Select a program” item and select it from the list of suggested programs.
After this, you will see the picture opened in Microsoft Picture Manager.
At the top is the main menu of the program (“File”, “Edit”, “View”, etc.). In order to change the size of the picture, click on the inscription “Picture” - there we will have 2 options to choose from: “Resize” or “Compress pictures”.
Microsoft Office Picture Manager provides two ways to reduce the size of photos: you can change the image size in pixels (this will change the weight) or you can set the desired weight of the photo (this will change the width and height of the picture accordingly).
- In the first case, you need to select the "Resize" function. In the “Resize” window that appears on the right, you can select standard width and height values, set these values arbitrarily, or enter a percentage that will show the ratio of the size of the reduced image to the size of the original.
- In the second case, in the "Drawing" menu, select "Compress Drawings." You will be offered three options for image compression, and you will be able to immediately estimate the final weight of the file.
Let's consider the first option - click " Resize".
A list of sizes will appear to the right of the photo; you can select from the suggested ones or specify the resolution manually in the “custom width and height” fields and click OK:
Method 2. Select "Compress pictures"- the following menu appears on the right:
After that, select the compression purpose: for documents, for web pages or for email. For each compression type, the original size and the size after compression are indicated, as well as the physical size of the drawing (measured in pixels). For example, you can select the compression size for Documents. As shown in the background information, with this type of compression the physical dimensions of the picture will be equal to 1024 * 768 pixels, and the size of the picture will be 301 KB, instead of the original 2.88 MB (i.e., the size of the picture will be reduced by more than 9 times). In this case, the final size after compression may be even less than the expected 301 KB.
By choosing other types of compression (for “Web pages” or for “E-mail messages”), you can achieve an even more significant reduction in the size of the image, however, this will also lead to a reduction in its dimensions. It is preferable that you try all three photo compression methods to decide what exactly you need.
After compressing the photo, save the picture by selecting the appropriate item in the “File” menu. It is better to select “Save as...” and give the picture a different name so as not to lose the original picture. After that, check the size of the saved file (right-click on it and select “Properties” or “Image Information”. In this case, the size of the image after compression became 180 KB.
Of all the programs, perhaps the most convenient for reducing the volume of photos is Microsoft Office Picture Manager. Its “Compress Pictures” menu allows you to literally get standard-sized images with a predetermined weight in just two clicks. In order to quickly reduce photos for uploading to a website, this is the best option.
But let's consider other ways.
How to make a photo smaller in Photoshop
1. From the Image menu, select the Image Size function. You can do this using the key combination Alt+Ctrl+I.
In the window that appears, set the parameters you need. For example, for images uploaded to the Internet, a size of 640-800 pixels is quite sufficient. on the larger side, the resolution is 72. To reduce a photo not for the purpose of further posting it on the Internet, it is better to leave the resolution at 300.
In the Image Size menu we need to specify the required size to enlarge or reduce the image. We enter it either in Pixel Dimensions or in Document Size.
The Pixel Dimensions parameters are intended for the Internet, so the size is indicated in pixels (all images online are measured in this way).
Width is the Width of the image, and Height is the Height. The bracket connecting them allows you to enter data from only one side; it calculates the second side itself. You can remove the bracket, then you will calculate the proportions yourself. 
For example, let's enter a width of 600.
Now let's look at Document Size.
This block is intended primarily for printing photographs, as is clear from its Russian name. Therefore, to specify the width and height of an image, there are seven units of measurement to choose from:
- percentage of the original size;
- inches (inches), 1 inch = 2.54 cm;
- centimeters (cm);
- millimeters (mm);
- points (point), 1 point = 1/72 inch = 1/12 pica;
- pica, 1 pica = 12 points;
- columns.
Select the unit type you are most familiar with and select the image size. When printing, it is most convenient to use centimeters - for a standard photograph, just set 10 by 15.
Next is Resolution.
The image resolution is specified here. You can leave it as it already is by default. Or set it lower.
Next are three more options that can be checked or deselected:
Scale Style, Constrain Proportions, and Resample Image. Leave them checked.
When all the parameters are specified, click OK and get the image of the size we need.
2. In order to save changes, in the "File" menu, select the "Save as..." function and when saving, set the quality to "High" (8) - for the Internet, or " Best" (12) - for further viewing from a computer. You can also save the photo by clicking in the "File" menu on "Save for Web and devices..." (Save for Web) - the key combination Alt+Ctrl+Shift+S. In the window that opens, select the JPEG saving format. To reduce the weight of the photo, you need to set the image quality parameters here: you can set it to high (60%).

2. In the "Standard size" drop-down menu, you can set standard width and height values in pixels or set the ratio of the size of the reduced image to the size of the original image in %.
3. Set an arbitrary value for height or width in the “Screen size” item; the second value will be calculated automatically (make sure the "Maintain proportions" checkbox is checked below).
4. Save your changes.
How to make a photo smaller in ACDSee 8.0 Photo Manager
1. To reduce an image in ACDSee 8.0 Photo Manager, in the “Edit” menu, select the “Image size” function. You can use the key combination Ctrl+R.
2. A Preview window will appear in the menu located on the right side of the editor window. You need to set it to Pixels, after which you set the image size in pixels. You only need to enter one value, height or width. The program will calculate the second value itself. But to do this, make sure that the Preserve Aspect Ratio function is checked and the value is set to Original.
3. To save changes to the image, select the Save as... function from the File menu or press Ctrl+Shift+S. Set the save format (file type) to JPEG. Open the Options dialog and set the Image quality to 60%.
Reducing images in GIMP.

You can edit using percentages or pixels. By saving, you will reduce the size of the image.
Remember! After changing the width parameter, you need to change the height proportionally. Otherwise, the picture may become too stretched and disproportionate.
Method number 2. Resizing in Photoshop
The photo file size can also be reduced in a professional raster image editing program - Photoshop. Follow the instructions:
- Open the application and import the required graphic file for further work;
- Find the Image tab on the main toolbar, click on it. Select Image Size from the drop-down list, as shown in the figure below;
- Change the image dimension parameters (width and height), and also make sure that the checkbox next to Maintain photo proportions is checked;
- Try reducing the photo by 10-15 percent. Thus, its final weight will also decrease.
Method No. 3. Using MS Office programs
The test Word processor version 2010 and earlier versions have an image compression function. This function has been removed in the latest versions of the program.
Add a picture to the document page, then in the tab that appears, select “Open with”, and then the MS Picture Manager application.
In the window that opens, click on the “Image” tab and select “Compress image”. The higher the compression ratio, the smaller the final file size will be.
Save the resulting changes.
Important! After compression, the quality of the illustration may deteriorate.
Method number 4. Using online services

To reduce the size, you can open the image menu and edit its height and width.
Also in the resizing window, you can select additional parameters for better compression: sharpening, sharpening filter, special keys for reducing/increasing the size and changing the image resolution.

A free application for working with pictures and photos called iPhoto is available for Mac OS users.

Compress for web pages. In this case, photos of average quality are obtained in the size of 448x336 pixels and the original size is reduced from 6.7 MB to 91.5 KB
Compress for email messages. Now there is the largest reduction in size to 160x160 and weight from 6.7 MB to 11.6 KB
Don't forget Save as, this is better than Save, because the original file in the best “heavy” quality does not disappear.

2 Ways to optimize images
We use standard width and height. Place a dot, then press the black triangle. In the drop-down menu, select the desired option (for example, web small 448x336 pixels) OK

We use arbitrary width and height. Place a point, set the desired width and height - OK - Save as
The size will be 400x300 pixels, respectively, and the weight will be 103 KB
We use the option percentages of the original width and height. Place a checkbox, select a percentage (for example 10) - OK - Save as.
This results in a new size of 397x298 pixels and a new weight of 103 KB

How does this even work?
Before resizing images, it is useful to understand how it works, which way to go and how much the image can be compressed. Several image formats are used in everyday life:
- BMP – uncompressed images, very large in size

- PNG and GIF are also compressed images. They weigh more than JPG, but have additional features, like a transparent background or animation (gifs)
There are also a million other formats, but it is important to understand that:
- BMP can always be reduced tens of times by simply converting it to JPEG
- PNG and GIF - can also be compressed, but not by tens, but by 1.5-3 times, while losing the transparent background or animation, if any.
- If the file is already JPEG, then you can compress it by reducing the resolution and/or quality
Resolution is the number of pixels in an image horizontally and vertically. For example, a camera with a 10.1 megapixel matrix has a photo resolution of 3648×2736 pixels. It may need to be reduced to 640x480 pixels, for example. That is, you can reduce the size of a photo by converting it to another format or reducing the image resolution.
INTERESTING: if your file has a BMP extension, then it can be reduced many times by simply resaving it as a JPEG. If you use 100% quality, then the difference will not be noticeable by eye. How? Read below.
How to reduce image size using standard Windows 7/8/10 tools
To do this, we need the standard Paint image editor. You can watch the video or read the article:

- And enter in percentage how much to reduce the image, or specifically in pixels. By the way, in Windows XP you can only enter percentages. If you leave the “Maintain proportions” checkbox, the image will not be flattened or stretched.
- Save the image as JPEG.

Scaling
One of the main functions when working with pictures in Photoshop is to enlarge the image on the monitor. Some beginners use a magnifying glass to zoom in on a photo. It's very long, inconvenient and forces you to press a lot of buttons.
Suppose I need to enlarge a screenshot of a computer mouse in the form of a typewriter with Ali.
There's no way I'm getting into the tools. I'll just hold down Alt on my keyboard and start moving my mouse wheel. It's much faster.
Of course, this method does not increase the weight or size of the image. The expansion it was in remains the same. However, do not forget this technique when working with pictures.
Size and proportions
There is already an article on my blog about. In it I tell you how to work with the photo itself: how to work with the frame tool to achieve an even square or circle, enter a certain size in the settings, and so on.
Now I will show you another method. More simple. It is ideal if you already have a pack of images ready for your website and you just need to quickly figure out the sizes. I use this method all the time.
Usually in Photoshop I have a hundred tabs open with screenshots that I need to compress to 500 pixels. Now I'll do the same thing as usual, but with just one image smart watch .
I need the "Save for Web" feature. In fact, that's just what it's called. Naturally, you can use it for other purposes. For example, prepare pictures for your own book or send by email. By the way, one of the most popular articles on my blog is just about that. The function is quite popular.
To bring up this window, I press Shift + Ctrl + Alt + S at the same time. At first, this combination seemed too long and inconvenient to me, but over time I realized that it is much more convenient.
I would go crazy when processing several dozen images to click on the “File” menu, then go to the “Export” categories and then find “Save for Web...”. Over time, the fingers got used to it and a not-so-short combination seems to be the most convenient way.
Let's talk about the menu. Not long ago I told anyone who is interested can read what its features and advantages are. For websites, jpeg is usually used. You can choose your solution and the image will be saved in it.
This, like many other useful settings, is the default. You just select once and all other pictures will be saved exactly the same.
You just need to figure out the size. For me, width is almost always important. I just click on the window and paste in my value. Then I click Enter.
Since there is a bracket next to the values, the height is built automatically. Thus, there is no shift in proportions.
After this, the weight of the picture also decreased from 145 KB to 50. Usually I just click on Enter a second time and a window opens with a search for the folder where I want to save the new picture, but you can also use the button at the bottom of the screen.
Now let's talk a little about weight. After all, it can also be corrected using this function.
Weight
In the article about that, I talk about weight and how to correct it using online Photoshop. But exactly the same result can be achieved through the PC version of the program.
Since for the previous screenshot I used a watch with music transmitted via Bluetooth, now I’ll work with the picture cool headphones working on the same system.
Select “Save for Web”, again click Shift + Ctrl + Alt + S, but from the “Optimization” section go to “4 options”. Everything seems to be the same, but the first picture is the original, and each subsequent one is saved at a lower quality threshold.
In some pictures, such as in my case, this will not be noticeable. It will feel like you are saving the photo without losing quality. Below, under the pictures, you can see the size and choose the one that suits you.
Unfortunately, there is no function in Photoshop yet that would allow you to set the weight of a photo, but you can look for yourself and if you need it to be up to 300 or 500 KB, then click on the option that suits you. Then press Enter or the “Save” button.
If the source is very large and professionally filmed, then the changes will be visible in the sketches. But this is a fairly rare case.
